Where one form of traffic (people, cars or trains) have to intersect and cross existing highways or rail tracks, this creates a hazardous situation. Inevitably even with all the safety measures such as barriers, traffic lights at junctions and crossings there are still an unacceptable number of accidents with injuries and deaths. At best such intersecting traffic streams result in delays and congestion. The segregation of various forms of traffic one from another is going to be even higher priority as our roads and rail tracks carry ever more traffic.

Successful Premiere for Direct Pipe® in the U.S.
The innovative one-pass "Direct Pipe®" pipeline installation method from Herrenknecht celebrated its successful debut in the US on August 29, 2010. After only 3 days of drilling, the "REM Directional Inc." jobsite team had successfully installed a 215-meter (705 ft) pipeline under Highway 70 in Arcadia (Florida). The 30" pipeline (76.2 cm) was laid in a single step using the Direct Pipe® method.

The breakthrough at the Gotthard Base Tunnel on October 15, 2010 in the Eastern tunnel marks the most significant milestone on the way to completing the longest railway tunnel in the world. Refining the art: Neil Phillips looks at the progress made in the development of slurries and on-site slurry plants used for pipejacking projects
Over the past ten years the use of slurry tunnelling has increased in the pipejacking industry and, at the same time, developments have been made in surface separation plants and their operation. Many of these improvements have come from the oil and gas-drilling industry and are necessary due to the changes in waste-disposal legislation in the UK. For example, recent laws have been brought in to ban liquid waste going directly to landfill, while the price of off-site treatment and carriage have subsequently increased. This called for the pipejacking contractor to separate the slurry from the excavated material on site as effectively as possible, thus reducing the need to transport liquid and reduce the waste going to landfill. Competition for contracts and improvements to TBM excavation rates have also called for contractors to be able to maximise production to remain competitive. Several areas have improved over the years, including the composition of the slurry used, the use of flocculants, the separation plant itself and its more efficient operation.
