The supply of power to the major centres of population must be assured to satisfy economic and social demands. Small-scale local generation plant, such as roof-mounted wind generators and solar panels, might play a part, but it is clear that large-scale electrical power generation will be required to supply the base load. The next generation of major power stations of any form (clean coal, nuclear, wind, tidal, etc.) will inevitably be built away from the major urban areas, and indeed many of the best sites are on the coast or offshore, often in very remote locations. Long transmission lines are thus inevitable, and are an indispensable component of a sustainable electricity supply in the 21st century. It is considered desirable to dispense with pylon-mounted overhead cables for electricity distribution and thus economic burial methods must be sought.

Trenchless sewer pipe renovation using the new tight-in-pipe method in the congested streets of the City of Dortmund, Germany

This paper introduces the Tight-in-Pipe Method. Tight-in-pipe is the term of a method for renovating sewer pipes and laterals with new, slightly smaller pipes in the same path without the need for filling the annullus between new pipe and host pipe. Deformation and misalignment can be compensated to a certain extent during pipe installation. Excavations can be abandoned almost completely when working from one manhole to the next. By this means, slight to medium deformations and misalignments are compensated, leaving circular pipes underground. The Tight-In-Pipe method is mainly used in projects for which a slight reduction of the original diameter is acceptable.Furthermore, this paper describes the application for this method on a larger project in the German City of Dortmund, 2006, where 4 sections of sewer pipe in Hertastraße had to be renovated, over a complete length 186 m. Installation with open trenches was impossible due to narrow site conditions and congested streets. Furthermore, this application method saved approximately 2/3 of the initially calculated costs had the project been carried out by open trenching. The contract was awareded to Paul SPEECK Rohrleitungs- und Tiefbau GmbH from Dortmund.

Tunneling at the massive Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project is now complete with the recent breakthrough of a Robbins TBM at the Jökulsá Diversion Tunnel. On April 9, 2008, the 7.2 m (23.7 ft) diameter machine ended its record-setting 8.7 km (5.4 mi) long drive. The breakthrough brings to a close nearly 50 km (31 mi) of bored tunnels using three Robbins machines and spanning four years of construction.

Behavior of over-cutting area injected by flyash surface-active agent mixture material

Lubrication can effectively reduce the needed thrust if a discrete layer of the lubricant is maintained between the pipe and the excavated soil. The lubricant must be designed to form a layer in the surrounding soil, be pressurized to overcome ground water pressure and stabilize the over-cutting area. Lubricant should fill the complete over-break void to minimize surface settlement. However, it was clarified that for a commercial lubricant to be effective, it is suggested that ingredients such as sodium and potassium be eliminated. As a result, for a lubricant to not lose its function as a support against the overburden pressure of an over-cutting area and to enable a reduction in thrust, it is necessary to develop a better quality lubricant which can overcome these problems as soon as possible. From this perspective, a lubricating material comprised of a mixture of the surface-active agent and flyash was developed. In this paper, in order to examine the characteristics and behavior of the flyash surface-active agent mixture developed for use as a lubricant, a fundamental investigation is performed.
