New Jersey?s ARC Tunnel will use Retractable Robbins TBM: Main Beam Machine will excavate Palisades Rail Routes
After 100 years, a new rail route will once again be burrowed below the Hudson River. Construction is set to begin on the Palisades Tunnels, the New Jersey portion of the Access to the Region’s Core (ARC) project stretching from North Bergen, New Jersey to Manhattan in New York City. An 8.38 m (27.5 ft) diameter Robbins Main Beam TBM was selected by PTP Constructors, a JV of Schiavone, Shea, and Skanska, to excavate the tunnels.

Two Main Beam TBMs Launched with Specialized Designs in China: Ground support has reached new heights in the mountains of Gansu Province. Two 10.2 m (33.5 ft) machines are the first ever Robbins Main Beam TBMs with a redesigned ground support system replacing roof shield fingers. The TBMs were launched to bore the twin 16.6 km (10.3 mi) long West Qinling rail tunnels under high cover.

Less fouling ? more efficient RO: German and Israeli ministries fund research project
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) have launched a research project with 1.5 million euros of funding. The three partners in the project are Dresden Technical University, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and the German company inge watertechnologies AG, which specializes in ultrafiltration and membrane technology. The aim is to find ways of reducing fouling and scaling in membranes – especially in the context of treating municipal waste water – in order to improve the membranes' performance and durability and ultimately improve the efficiency of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant.
