UK wastewater plant responds to rising demand and rising standards
The resort town of Gillingham in south west England has responded to growing population plus increased treatment standards by installing four of Nordic Water’s Dynasand moving sand bed filters. The installation in its present configuration is designed to meet anticipated needs till 2013 – but with additional media and designed capacity for a potential fifth unit, it is expected to meet Gillingham’s needs until the year 2020.

The best present for the 50th anniversary of HOBAS Pipe Systems probably came from HOBAS itself: A record result of the Group's annual accounts since the company's founding in 1957. HOBAS, the leading supplier of CC-GRP (Centrifugally Cast Glassfiber Reinforced Plastics) Pipe Systems, advanced production technology and know-how, achieved a consolidated turnover of approximately 200 Million Euros and grew by 11% within one year only. From 2006, the Group boosted pre tax profits by 26%. These are company results of which Ms. Strohmaier, who was appointed Managing Director of the Group in summer 2007, is very proud: "In spite of the tense general economic situation last year HOBAS peaked in its performance and closed the business year far over the set target."

Robbins TBM mobilizes at Ceneri
On February 15 a cutterhead turning ceremony marked the official startup of adit tunneling on the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The 9.7 m (31.8 ft) Robbins machine will excavate a 2.4 km (1.5 mi) long access tunnel in Sigirino, Switzerland for the Consorzio Monte Ceneri (CMC) JV-a consortium of CSC, Lugano, Frutiger SA, Thun, Rothpletz, Lienhard + Cie, and Aarau.

Increasing demand for pipeline rehabilitation in Central Eastern European countries
The purpose of the paper was to present development prospects of trenchless technologies and pipeline rehabilitation market in the Central and Eastern European countries. The basis for the paper was infrastructure ownership structure in the light of economic and political changes and financing procedures connected with the access to the EU funds.The paper is partly dedicated to preparations and running large municipal projects along with related opportunities and threats. Several recent trenchless reference projects will be presented in the paper to illustrate the project scale better; in particular those involving comprehensive renovation of water, gas and sewer pipeline.

The French recommendations for the structural design of large sewer linings
The French National project of research and experimentation named RERAU (Rehabilitation of Urban Network Sewers) has published in 2004 its recommendations for the structural design of large sewer linings after a five years period of preparation and discussion. The design method works for circular or non circular linings and takes into account the exact geometry of the lining (curve radius and imperfections) and the interaction with the existing host. The concept based on an approximate analytical solution, supports simple formula and diagram usage for stress, deformation and stability analyses. The method gives formulas for the buckling pressure of non circular linings (egg-shaped linings). Geometrical imperfections (ovality, gap, local intrusion, flat spot) are treated individually using reduction factors for the buckling pressure and amplification factors for the stresses (bending moment and axial force) and the deflection.

Appropriate application of controlled turbine bypass valves
During recent years, operation requirements for controlled turbine bypass valves and bottom discharge valves have increased continuously. 10 or 15 years ago these valves might have operated „not neatly” under certain opening degrees, i.e., there were cavitation phenomena, vibrations or pulsating discharge of the water. Nowadays, this is not the state of the art any more. These valves must perform neat flow discharge across the whole range of opening, from „Open“ to „Closed“ position and vice versa, without any vibrations nor cavitation.

Performance characteristics of deterministic leak detection systems
The aim of leak detection and leak location (LDL) is the limitation of losses and possible environmental damage, especially for leaks with hazardous products. The recognition of a leak, the knowledge of its leak rate and its location should lead to preassigned action taken by the operating personnel. A basic requirement for that is a reliable leak detection system that provides well-defined performance characteristics. They mainly depend on the metering precision of the instrumentation and the performance of the process data acquisition. On this basis it provides a well-defined response within an appropriate period of time and unique behaviour on operational intervention. A properly calibrated LDL system is a valuable assistance to the operating personnel. It is sensitive and at the same time it shows a low false alarm rate.

Robbins TBM goes on the fast track for Papua New Guinea tunnel
A 5.6 m (18.4 ft) diameter High Performance (HP) Main Beam TBM will be delivered on a "fast track" program just six months after contract signing. The Robbins TBM will be used for a series of dewatering tunnels at the Ok Tedi Mine in Papua New Guinea, with excavation beginning in the first quarter of 2008.
