Characterization of soil conditioning for mechanized tunnelling
The EPB tunnelling has achieved a higher number of application and this trend is clear both for large size machines and for small diameter machines. In order to extend the application field for EBP machines, the natural soil has to be treated with additives during the excavation. The results of a test program on different conditioned not-cohesive soils by means of slump cone test are presented in the paper. The water content and the amount of conditioning foam were varied in the tests in order to find the influence on the quality of the conditioned ground and how the foam and water contents influence the mix behaviour.

French Highway secured in unique HOBAS fashion
The French highway network spans almost 12000 route kilometers, 60% of which are administered in a concession system by private companies such as APRR (Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône). Thousands of metal culverts have been installed along the roads to channel water. More than 50% of these are steel circulars or arches. After being in service for 30 to 40 years, these culverts have reached their maximum lifetime and are at risk to collapse any time causing road ruptures as approximately 20 years ago: Road embankment, paving and culverts needed to be repaired immediately which required an expensive construction of temporary diversions for both water and traffic. As a consequence, the highway companies conducted an extensive inventory.

Robbins TBM completes drainage tunnels at Po Shan
A 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter Robbins TBM recently completed two drainage tunnels in Hong Kong without a conventional back-up system. Excavation of the short tunnels, measuring just 244 m (800 ft) and 165 m (541 ft) in length, concluded on March 17, 2008.

The Spanish region of Aragon announces the largest regional water treatment plant in Europe at IFAT
The investment is in excess of one billion euros and will permit the sanitation of an annual volume equal to that of a large canal between Munich and Zaragoza. A pioneer management model is applied with the participation of the Government of Aragon and the private initiative, including companies such as ACCIONA WATER, AQUALIA, ATECMA, ISOLUX WAT, and the Temporary Unions of Companies (UTE by its Spanish initials) UTE Marcor Ebro-URBASER and UTE López Navarro-COMSA.

Condition assessment of sewers - is digital image editing and processing becoming standard in CCTV inspection of sewers?
The use of digital image editing and processing has been increasingly entering optical condition assessment of sewers. Based on this technology further and new developments of the different inspection systems open up new fields of application and qualitative as well as quantitative statements on the sewer’s condition. The measurement functions that are connected to digital imaging provide new opportunities of reliable and realistic prediction and assessment of the condition. The following article presents the results of a study on an inspection system which combines conventional (CCTV) and digital image recording technology (so-called hybrid camera).

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport 90 years old and in top shape
Schiphol is constantly being expanded and drained. A particular feature of the area is that it is 3 meters below sea level. With the skill of the Dutch in draining polders, this land was wrung from the sea around 1850. Draining the land today means different challenges need to be met: de-icing liquids used in the Winter are separated from the rainwater and drained off separately for environmental protection reasons.

Risks during the pull back operation of horizontal directional drilling
The success of the pull back operation of horizontal directional drilling can be increased by performance of a risk analysis. The problems, which might occur during a pull back operation, are varying from high pulling forces to uncompleted pull back operations and from slight coating damages to deteriorated pipelines. The nature of these problems is related to the pipeline-soil interaction. The pipeline soil interaction can be defined as the combined behaviour of the pipeline and the surrounding soil in terms of stresses and deformations. Consideration of all aspects of the combined pipeline soil behaviour formed the bases of a global risk analysis of the pull back operation. Besides high normal forces on the bore hole wall in case of small bending radii or irregular shaped bore holes, occurrence of obstacles and bore hole instability are identified as major risks during the pull back operation. The risk analysis resulted in a series of risk reducing measures for future horizontal directional drillings.

Landmark onsite assembly of Robbins double shield completed
Onsite assembly of a massive 10.0 m (32.8 ft) Double Shield TBM has been completed in Andhra Pradesh, India. A ceremony was held on March 18, 2008 to mark the official launch of the Robbins machine - the first of two TBMs to bore a 43.5 km (27.0 mi) long water tunnel for the Alimineti Madhava Reddy (AMR) Project.
