Herrenknecht increases trainee quota
In 2008, Herrenknecht AG has once again created new apprenticeship training positions. 65 young men and women began their working lives in fall 2008 by taking up either an apprenticeship or a cooperative education program. The number of trainees has increased by more than 20 percent compared to the previous year. Herrenknecht is providing training to a total of 178 young people. In spring 2009, the trainees and the team of trainers will be moving into new premises which have a useable floor space of about 2,800 square meters.

Records tumble at the Cabrera Tunnel: Never before has a TBM tunnelled so fast
The two tunnel tubes of the Cabrera Railway Tunnel near Valencia are completed: The Herrenknecht Double Shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) S-373 achieved breakthrough after the second tunnel on September 25, 2008 – 5 months ahead of schedule. This means that the planned overall construction time was cut by a quarter. Tunnelling performances of up to 106 meters per day were achieved during the completion of the shell of the two approx. 6,000 meter long tubes, so that the tunnel was ready to "accommodate" the railway technology in only 14 months.

Gotthard Base Tunnel: Tunnelling works in the eastern tube of the Piora Basin finished
The Herrenknecht Gripper-TBM S-210 passed the Piora Basin – a critical zone of the Gotthard Massif - without problems. The tunnel boring machine S-211, driving the western tube, will also arrive in the Piora Basin at the beginning of 2009. North of the basin, both machines will have to tackle another seven kilometers of hard rock - at an overburden of 2,000 meters and with rock temperatures of up to 50 degrees centigrade.

Groningen (NL) Sets on HOBAS® CC-GRP Pressure Jacking Pipes
Environmental aspects and future-oriented thinking lead the municipality of Groningen in the Netherlands to extending their existing sewer main sized DN 1000 and DN 1200. The gravity sewer main could not cope with high flow rates occurring during e.g. heavy rainfall. To prevent sewage from overflowing and polluting nature the authorities decided to convert it into a closed pressure system. With this and its extension by 2.4 km HOBAS CC-GRP Sewer Systems a capacity of 3000 m3/h will be achieved so that the line would easily cope with future needs as well as the connection of a further village.

Robbins 19-inch Cutters Power through Alps
On November 6, 2008 a Robbins machine successfully negotiated high cover and potential squeezing ground. The 9.7 m (31.8 ft) diameter Main Beam machine completed the 2.4 km (1.5 mi) long Ceneri adit tunnel on schedule after ten months of boring.

Replacement of valves in the gate valve house of the Schwammenauel dam and hydropower station
The Rur dam with the Schwammenauel hydropower station is located in the Nordeifel mountains near the city of Heimbach. With its storage volume of 203 million m³ it is one of Germany's largest dams. After more than 65 years of service, the valves at the bottom outlet had to be replaced. The old plunger valves were replaced by hollow jet valves with a much higher capacity.

Three Robbins EPBMs to Improve Mexico City Drainage
Mexico City, founded on what was once an island in the middle of a lake, is sinking at the rate of 10 cm (4 in) per year. Over the last 30 years, the city’s critical drainage lines have lost their slope, resulting in a 40% reduction in overall capacity. To remedy the problem the city is moving forward on the 62 km (39 mi) long Emisor Oriente sewer tunnel to drain additional water from the Valley of Mexico. The tunnel will be constructed using a total of six TBMs, including three 8.93 m (29.3 ft) diameter Robbins EPBMs, to be shipped to the jobsite by the end of 2009.

An Innovative New Technology for Trenchless Rehabilitation of High Pressure Gas/Liquid Transmission Pipelines
Smart Pipe® is a recently completed, innovative, new technology that has the potential for significantly reducing the cost, public inconvenience, and environmental threats associated with rectifying damaged and degraded high pressure pipelines. As new pipe or as a tight fitting liner, it is a composite material in which the key element is an ultra high strength/light weight fabric that is contra-helically wrapped onto a thermoplastic core pipe. Using a portable factory, the material can be manufactured at a job site, and installed simultaneously. As a liner, it is pulled into an existing pipeline in folded form, then re-rounded under internal pressure to become a tight fitting liner at the inner wall of a damaged/degraded host pipe. In this manner, a Smart Pipe® rehabilitation is fully capable of restoring, or exceeding, the original line pressure.
