Soil Compactibility Classes

This page presents the assignment of different soil types to three compactibility classes based on German standards. As per ASTM, non-cohesive to cohesive soils as well as coarse-grained and mixed soils (sand and gravel) have good compactibility characteristics.

Table:
Compactibility class V1 to V3 as per ZTVA-StB 97 [ZTVAStB97]
Compactibility class Description Soil Group as per DIN 18196
Good compactibility (V 1) Non-cohesive to cohesive,
coarse-grained and mixed
soils (sand and gravel)
GW, GI, GE, SW, SI, SE, GU, GT, SU, ST
Moderate compactibility (V 2) Cohesive, mixed-grained soils
(Gravel and sand with a large clay
or silt portion)
GU, GT, SU, ST
Not easy compactibility (V 3) Cohesive, fine-grained soils
(Clays or silts)
UL, UM, TL, TM

In this context, the tabular information on the classification of soils for civil engineering purposes in this Table may be interesting.
