Lake Mead Intake No. 3 to receive Tunnel Achievement Award at 9th Annual Breakthroughs in Tunneling Short Course
Sep 07, 2016
The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project has been selected as the winner of the 2016 Tunnel Achievement Award for Project Excellence. The award is presented annually at the Breakthroughs in Tunneling Short Course, to be held September 12-15, 2016, in Boulder, Colorado.
In 2008, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) awarded a $447 million design-build contract to Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC), a joint venture of Salini Impregilo and S.A. Healy, to construct a 15,000-ft tunnel under Lake Mead to assure a sustainable drinking water source for residents in the Las Vegas area. The project included construction of an intake structure at the bottom of the lake as well as a 600-ft deep access shaft. Challenging geology and extremely high pressures on the TBM made construction of the tunnel extremely challenging.
Arup USA, in conjunction with Brierley Associates, provided project design for the contractor. CH2M and MWH provided consulting services for SNWA. This project completion had many challenges, but through innovation and collaboration, a successful outcome was achieved.
The annual Breakthroughs in Tunneling Short Course will be held on the campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder. Attendees will learn all aspects of tunneling – from planning and geotechnical exploration through to design and construction. The course material is presented by worldwide experts in the industry with practical experience, representing engineers, contractors, owners, equipment manufacturers and more.
Register for the Tunneling Short Course and participate in the Tunnel Achievement Awards Banquet on Wednesday, September 14 at the Boulder Marriott where industry peers and experts will network, honor and learn about the Intake No. 3 project.
